New York. 11th January. 1799.
My dear Sir,
I learn that Mr Jones has sailed from Boston without deciding on the reference between the family of Mr Waldo, and Messrs Winslows and myself. If the number of the referees should be completed, and the proceeding go on, I should be very apprehensive of the event.
Mr Winslow has written me, that it appears to be the judgment of you and Mr Hickborn, that the bulk of Burt should be looked through, and Mr [undecipherable: probable reading Boctmer]'s improper administration terminated.
Could this arrangement be effected, I confess it would be very consistent with the view I am able to take of the subject, and I have written to this purpose to Mr Winslow and to Mr Hickborn — If you and they, therefore, all circumstances considered, should be of this opinion, it would receive my hearty approbation — In that case, any demands that the family of the late Col Waldo should have on Messrs Winslows and myself, must be substantiated by a suit at law. I shall hope to hear soon from you on the subject —
I am my dear Sir
Your obliged and most
Obedient humble servant.
