Howell. esqʳ] Trenton Jan^y 1. 1789 Sir There is an action depending between Col^o Mathias Ogden of the first Jersey Regiment an myself which occasions me to Solicit you to furnish me with a certified Copy of his account from your Books, both Debt & Credit as it stands registered in your Office, you'll please to give it to Furman Yards who will inclose it in a letter to me please also to inform me when I may call for my certificates in consequence of the accounts left with you some time past, any expence attending this business shall be paid by me your complyance in this will oblege your Hum^b Serv^t John Polhemus [Cap^t Jn^o Polhemus - -] Office of Army Accounts New York Jan^y 10. 1789 Sir Your letter of the 1 Ins^t came to hand this day. I should have been at an utter loss to have known what accounts were wanting in the case between you & Col^o Ogden if Col^o Conway had not a few minutes since accidentally called at the Office — the accounts you allude to Col^o Conway informs me are respecting the Stoppages made from the men in 1776 of the 1. Reg^t & which is supposed to have been rec^d by Col^o Ogden, — Col^o Ogden has not Settled any account of that nature with me or my predecessor, he stands charged in the Books of this Office for cash rec^d of the P. M. Gen^l in march 1777 for the paying full of the 1 Jersey Reg^t for the months of Oct^or & Nov^r 1776 amounting to 6825 ²⁴/₇₂ doll^s & for 637 ⁴⁸/₇₂ dolls paid him for a number of men of s^d Reg^t who remained at Quebec. these are the whole that he appears to be charged with on acc^t of the old first Jersey Reg^t commanded by Col^o Winds if a copy of these abstracts will be of service they may I expect be obtained of Joseph Nourse esq^e Register of the Treasury, with whom they are lodged — Jam^s J. DeHaas —] Sir, — In answer to your request of "how long it w^d take to make out a regimental account" I have to observe that a person acquainted with the nature of army Accounts would take but a little time compared with that of another uninformed in the business, besides it is to be further observed that it greatly depends upon the accounts themselves as some are much more complex than others and to decide on this question a person should be acquainted with the very accounts alluded to — The accounts of your late father were (to the best of my recollection) examined & stated by me in about four weeks — J.
