W^m Knox [Knox N Y 10 Nov '88 XXIII - 15] I received yours of the 8^th Instant last evening, enclosing sundry letters for Major Sargent which shall be forwarded to him by the next Pittsburgh post which will leave this on the 24^th. With respect to that post, I conversed yesterday with M^r Hazard, he tells me it will be continued. The first contract expired the 5^th of this month, but he informed me that a new one is already made, or making at Philadelphia so that a regular correspondence will not be interrupted except from the state of the roads during the Winter Season. L^t Pratt writes on the 12^th from Trenton where he arrived with his party all well early that morning. The only thing which has not been conducted as I wished in Pratt's business, is that he has not been supplied with Cartouch Boxes and several other small articles, the most material however are the Cartouch boxes. this has arisen from two causes. the first is that when Cap^t Brice was here he gave me reason to suppose that those at the Point would answer. The second that when Pratt arrived at this City on his way to Brunswick, he was not furnished with these articles on which M^cTagg immediately wrote to Hodgdon to forward them to Brunswick by the Stage if the Waggons should have left Phil^a. Hodgdon has conceived that the troops would march through Phil^a and therefore writes that these articles [would] be delivered them as they [passed] through — M^r Pratt cont[inued] on [the direct leave of the] that if he should not meet the Cartouch boxes &c at Trenton to send a trusty Sergeant to Phil^a for them, and to post him on the route to Reading. M^r Hazz[ard] [undecipherable: probable reading "din'd"] with me last evening, and I send [enclosed] in your letter to him the Articles which had been delivered Cap^t Savage and Burbeck were [strikethrough: to be deducted] to be deducted from the clothing now to be sent on, but as Savages had been previously supplied in complete [undecipherable] for the number he has in his company, and the [undecipherable] will probably fail to draw tomorrow, it that it must be arranged in directions to him. — With respect to Burbeck's clothing it is packed ready for Shipping by the first vessel which may offer, in complete [undecipherable] as the former, but the Boxes can be opened and the Articles deducted, which will be attended to tomorrow mo[rning]. You mention nothing respecting the Small Detachment at West Point formerly under [undecipherable] therefore nothing will be done for clothing them until further directions are received from you. M^r Smith did not bring on your order for the Clothing, but promised to send it on his return, however your mentioning that you had given him an order, was sufficient for the delivery of the same for which he has receipted. M^r Hoffman has not paid the 500 Dollars, but I suppose he [will] this week. Count de Moustiers. Madame de Brehan and party arrived this day after three Weeks absence at [undecipherable] — Dupont tells me the Count was very much pleased with the [undecipherable] and with Mount Vernon and spoke in terms of satisfaction. [undecipherable] he passed three Days at M^r Vernon. I am quite recovered, and have hopes that the precautions I have taken will secure me from any new Attack.
