Canterbury, Oct 24 1800
Sir,
Prince Negro enlisted into the Continental Service in the year 1777 during the War and belonged to the Second Connecticut Regiment and served faithfully untill by sickness lost one eye and was by other infirmities, brought on him while in the service rendered incapable to do camp duty & was transfered in to the Corps of Invalids and sent to New London to do Garrison duty where he was left without any Officer to direct him in his duty, and he applied to Col. John Durkee who was at that time at Norwich and commanding officer in that quarter, who gave him liberty to go home and remain untill further orders, where he remained untill Peace took place and received no Orders nor discharge. — His is an honest inoffensive ignorant person & is justly entitled to some aid from the country that has had his Services. I have taken pains & made myself acquainted with the above affairs & facts & can say they are true. I want from your office certificates of his transfer to the Corps of Invalids & what return was made of him afterwards, & whatever else may appear in your office necessary to enable him to give to the Board proper to hear him, a proper & fair consideration of his case.
I have no interest in this affair but a compassionate feeling for a poor Soldier & if consistent with right wish him that reward his services & sufferings intitle him to receive the time to apply for relief will soon expire therefore I am obliged to urge for an answer as soon as possible. the bearer this I have requested to call & take it
