New York Septem^r 23^d 1788 Dear Sir — Your favour of the 4 & 12 Ins^t. are received, the latter did not reach me untill yesterday, & as I expect this will not meet with you at Portland, thought it most adviseable to direct it for Boston, my letter of the — I flatter myself will find you on your return from Portland. — The method you propose in respect to the balance of M^r Storer's accounts meets my approbation & if you can obtain a good Bill (of which you can judge) on this place it will be the safest method of transacting the business, by no means do not give him a discharge untill some security is obtained. — I should have no objection to complying with your wishes in staying a week or two longer, but for the nature of the business now before me, I earnestly wish to begin the State accounts and as the three Grand Commis-sioners are appointed, it is expected by them that the accounts of several States will be ready in a short time for them to proceed on — this circumstance induces me to request you will not tarry longer than can be possi-bly avoided — The Gentlemen of the Office are all well & present their compliments. — J H[owell] M^r Caleb Swan
