Sir
Your old Pension accounts for expenses incurred on command in Virginia in the year 1780 have been referred to me by Congress for settlement. I have adjudged them on the principles adopted by the late Auditors of the Army in [undecipherable: pursuance] of the directions of the late Commander in Chief and find that a balance of 104½ dollars specie is due you — a Certificate for this balance I am prevented from issuing as I find you are charged in the principal Books of the Pay Office with the sum of 502 dollars new [undecipherable] received from the State of Maryland in the year 1781 which the entry expresses is to be accounted at 2/6 for [undecipherable]— I wish you to inform me whether this Money was received on Account of your pay, or on what principles the charge is founded, for it seems a Mystery to me that in the several settlements made by you that no notice has been taken of it by Mr Pierce. I am therefore induced to suppose that there is some mistake in the transaction and which it is in your power to rectify.
I find by a settlement made at the treasury that you received your pay &c to the 9th May 1781 pray was this the time you retired from Service or have you any further demands to pay on the United States. I am led to this Query as I cannot find any accounts in this office that can inform me when you left the Service— the department of Pay Master General & Commissioner of Army Accounts having become vacant by the Death of Mr Pierce. I was induced to apply for it.
