Dear Sir
Your favor of the 21st ultimo is duly received and when the present present arrives you may expect my thanks —
Mr Hardy the accomptant informs me that the State of Virginia is having settle with a number of her citizens for supplies furnished Services performed the returns of which have not the been made to the commissioners of the Treasury, they have no claim on the account now presented which circumstance prevents them from settling any claims from your quarter of the nature presented, as the period for receiving all claims on the United States is fast approaching I am of opinion that the certificate transmitted had better remain with the accomptant for if they are withdrawn the proprietors may be embarrassed a settlement — I shall therefore retain them until you please to order the contrary
Your Convention I understand are now in session & at two papers cost but a trifle I will particularly thank you for one that contains the debates which you can just under cover to Mr Pierce, in return you shall receive one from me when the Gentlemen of this State convene which will be the 17th current — The anti federalists have a large majority here in Convention
I feel exceeding am happy to inform you that Mr Pierce is in a very poor state of Health, his [undecipherable] convince him in a deep consumption & in my opinion nothing but a miracle can preserve him — That cursed business in Virginia I presume has been the cause — he has for some time retired from all business —
Doctr Goulds papers are received
I am & Yours
