Dear Sir New York September 12. 1787
In Consequence of the directions of the Treasury board I have this day transmitted to Nath. Pendleton Esqre your Ackmowledgment of the receipt of the New Emission money lent you by resow July 1781 which money you have Attended was lodged with Mr Alexander. the Board have also directed me to request Mr Pendleton to recover the money in the most expeditious &effectual Manner, for the use of the United States. When the Clerk examined Your Accounts he supposed that Mr Alexander, and not you was Accountable for this money, but the Auditor &Comptroller have refused to admit it to your Credit & you therefore remain indischarged from the amount, for the reason that the Person in whose hands the money has been entrusted are unknown and your Authority for doing it disputed, as well as that you are considered as the Officer who ought to have retained it in your own possession to have secured it for the Public.
I am unhappy in being the Vehicle of so important a demand, especially as I am altogether Convinced of your integrity, but the duty of my Office & the Public Interest make it necessary.
I have recd the Bills wch you forwarded me but this affair turning up, causes a total Stop to the further Settlement of your Accounts, & recovery of any part of your pay.
