Richmond June 29^th 1787 Dear Sir Your two letters, the last of which is of the 19^th, are received. Doctor Middletons claim cannot be granted on his present certificates. I shall write to him & enclose a Copy of Colo. Carringtons Certificate — I hope the business of the Office goes on well and that my presence can be dispensed with for a longer time than was expected, and I hope also that Mr. Howell will soon join you, my Compliments to the Gentlemen of the Office and remain with regard &c — Mr. Swan Pierce [a p.s. of Howells above] Annapolis June 30^th 1787 Sir I received your letter on the subject of specie still due the Maryland Line the abstract made out by me which you mention was executed with as much accuracy as was in my power from the papers and vouchers I could command — It was a work of Labour & I presume is not wide from the true State of the case, I left the balances to be struck on a supposition the account would undergo a revisision in M^r Pierces Office. The account I presented as being authentic, as you will see by my letter to M^r Pierce, on the subject which was some time in course of the Winter 85 I believe, however you will have recourse to it or the copy of it in my letter Book wherein you will find a full account of the matter & which you will consider as good authority for the return as though I had signed it — I am &c Caleb Swan Esq^r Jno. White Annapolis July 6^th 1787 Dear Sir, Inclosed you will receive the copy of a letter I received last summer from M^r Pierce by which you will observe I was desired to inform myself whether all the monies charged Colonel Adams was accounted for as the papers on which this enquiry was to be founded have been removed to your Office, I beg you will have the matter investigated and give me your directions to deliver the certificates as they have applied and without M^r Pierces or your authority, I have declined delivering them.
