Joseph Clay Esq^r Richmond Virginia June 3. 1787— Dear Sir Being in this State on business, which will detain me untill the first of September I shall not be able before that time to pay an attention to your business at the Treasury, as I hear that your bills are arrived in New York — You were informed by me some time since that I had sent an order in favor of Jn^s Neuville Loan Officer in Charleston, on Thomas Commander Russell for the money which was left in Mr. Alexander's hands. I have a few days since had a line from Mr. Neuville acquainting me that this business appears to have a very disagreeable complexion, as he could not obtain any satisfactory information of the man after [undecipherable] — I am at a loss to tell Mr. Neuville a mysterious tale of his being a great distance from Charleston but where she could not inform, however she said she expected him shortly in Town — I am fearful that the Cettie will never find a dollar of this money, cannot you by some of your connexions, make a discovery of this man and give the information to Mr. Neuville & myself — I am &c Pierce
