M^r Pierce is gone to Virginia, and in all probability will Continue there for some months — I am to inform you that a settlement of your account for Certificates received of M^r King, will be absolutely necessary previous to your receiv-ing any Compensation for your trouble, and indeed it is a doubt with me whither you Can be Considered as an agent, as M^r King has receipted to M^r Pierce for all the certificates, and is held accountable — however this is only opinion, and need not prevent your application after a settlement takes place. Dear Sir, Your letter of 23 march To M^r Pierce was received this day — ere this reaches you I presume he will be at Richmond — I wish you to mention to M^r Pierce, the Case of Lieutenant Stevenson, as I do not think myself Justifiable in issuing his Commutation without full proof of his being deranged, which cannot be procured here — The Certificates for Moxley's pay are enclosed agreably to your request. I suppose you have heard that your Brother Ned has an heir — I am informed the mother and boy are like to do well — I am &c I. Howell J^r.
