West Point August 27th 1797
Mr James Munroe has repaired and cleaned no less than and Stands of Arms which you resided, on a Contract with him for in your letter of March 16th 1797 — which for which I have given him a Certifiate — 323 of them is Arms that was taken in from the Army in the Year 1783 & 84 in good order — The Other 663 are to be deducted from the damaged Arms, and add to the good Stands —
Of the Genl Jnocks Stock perhaps 4 have any piece of the Arms repaired. I think it would be best to begin with the Government Striking Stock (a Sum of 650) as men take can be fetch to the Stores take the old ones before to repair — Either Call on the Pub. Con. to Weed to half Stock and Splice the Others which wants it — And at present we have not made that it will to repair 100 — I think if left that the public have new Stock and Locks sufficient for the whole —
I believe there is about 300 which will be worth Slocking and about 100 that will be worth Locking —
Mr Munroe is very desirous of doing them, and I believe he will do them as Cheap as any body —
The Jog that he will Stock and Clean, the That want it for two Dollars 75 each, and repair and clean the rest for One dollar each, which will average but little better than 150 for the whole — And he will make about 200 Jrons, Loops and Studs if wanting for the whole, also find his own Corks and Sides to Complete them —
The further from Stocks and all the materials to work With. find in the Mill, Tan, Glue, and he and all the Necessary Shops Such as a Stove and dobing) and what is wanted more than them Just enough, and he helped them up —
He will do them as quick a time as you plase thank prefer to have them done
Included is a Certifiate of what provision has been delivered to 4th July 1797 —
Captain Buchet has made application for Six men for his Company at the Rate of 10 Cents per Month for 100 Men, which he informs me he drew at Boston and Springfield, agreeable to a Stipulation of Capigen June him in the Year 1783 —
Of the first case also I to let you know the allowance for the Troops in Jersinnian and Wittas, and I much prefer to have any work more helped, I will forward an estimate for that purpose —
Now is a very good time to purchase what wood is wanting for both Jaisonian and Wittas, and if you Chief I well require this let you know the lowest it Can be purchased for delivered here —
The Honorable I am Sir &c
— Major Genl Knox, Secretary at War —
