Office of Army Accounts New York March 2^d 1787 The Commissioner is requested to attend to the [undecipherable] the claim of the [undecipherable] to [undecipherable] of Captain John Thompson for the [undecipherable] of New York That there appears to be a balance of [undecipherable] hundred [undecipherable] ninety Dollars due to [undecipherable] Thompson at the settlement by his [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] of [undecipherable] a which balance Colonel Edward [undecipherable] [undecipherable] to him the sum of one thousand and two Dollars for [undecipherable] the Colonel has produced [undecipherable] his [undecipherable] account Books and attested the same has been [undecipherable] to Capt. It is a rule with me not to admit claims of a long standing where no complaint settlement appears to be made At the time, unless the claimant produces evidence of his demands by some original papers or records that have existed at the time of his service. It is so easy to obtain post facto [undecipherable] from memory on any occasion that no reliance can be placed in them. I have also applied to Col^o Cunnington for information of the manner of his leaving the service without [undecipherable]. This claim is therefore delayed for there must be some reason for his being omitted in the different returns Your Books of Receipts as also your Letter of the 7 of [undecipherable] are received.
