New York Dec^r 22^d 1786 Sir If M^r [undecipherable] an agent for the Jersey Line has returned into your Office or any other State Office the certificates that he received from me which remained unpaid by him to the individuals you will oblige me by searching for a certificate N^o 22052 Issued in favor of Jarvis Bloomfield for one hundred and nineteen dollars which I find I have paid by mistake the same not being due. if it is in your hands I wish you to make such a memorandum on the Same that it may be returned to me for which I will give my receipt. but if M^r Bloomfield has already received it you will oblige me by informing me of it, that I may recover the amount from him — If M^r Blair has not settled his accounts or returned his certificates you will oblige me by forwarding this letter to him — I am &^c J Pierce The Treasurer of the State of New Jersey Sir New York December 22^d 1786 If I understand the nature of your claim for the pay of three Companies commanded by Maj^r Hannibal, it arises from your purchasing from the Soldiers their pay which has been given them by the State in the Jerseys certificates & that a law of the State has not been given order that this should be considered as payment for confiscated properties. that I should pass the same through my Office. M^r Threat made an application to me for that purpose when I was in Georgia but an objection arose that the muster of the men were not produced to prove the payment — If M^r Threat will deliver these with the original vouchers into your or any other persons hands with an order from the executive of the State to deliver the certificates I will adjust the account and place the amount of the same to the credit of the State in the same manner as I have done the other advances made to the Line, but I cannot now consider this as the demand of an individual for the State having assumed it, the resolutions of Congress as they now stand will not admit of an alteration I am &^c J Pierce Joⁿ Monied Esquire
