Letter from the Commissioner of Army Accounts
Document 1786Letter from the Commissioner of Army Accounts relating to expenses, recruiting service, and subsistence funds.
New York Decem’ 14 15 1786 Sir, Your Letter of the 17th July last covering an Account for expences on command was duly received– The monies you advanced for Victualling the Soldiers when on their march to join the Regiment I am willing to allow provided you make it appear that no part of those Sums were received from the public on account of subsistence & that no Rations were drawn for them during the time. The expenses (amounting to £26 10 [undecipherable]) between the 16 [undecipherable] 77 & [undecipherable] 14th following, being as is expressed for recruiting and collecting Clothing appear appear to be improper, as Col Sherbourne drew the Subsistence of the Officers while on the Recruiting Service and on settlement of his Accounts has produced your Receipt for the Sum of £20.14–being so much due you for while on the Recruiting Service–the latter & former Services appear to have been performed at the same time, therefore payment cannot be granted twice for the Duty– I am &c S. Pierce
