You may judge therefore of my surprize when after meeting Eight months the hard est upon my path a torrent of abuse which ended. It stond Love, regarded [undecipherable] not obliged me to take anchement for my defence and to lay his Letter before Congress in the instance of which (then I presume presented him receiving his Pay, which I had recommended to be given, and which I know he had any disposition to prevent). I have now just myself serve from my personal insults. he was in this Town for some months after I referred his claim to Congress. I was after that for some time in Philadelphia when he was there, and I have Constantly resided in this City ever since. he not therefore if he felt the disposition have acted in a more feeble manner than to set Still & threaten without coming near me? and now that he is louder and more menacing than I not ought to supprose it arises from a greater distance. I view him as a mad man and myself as Acting in an Official Capacity under the immediate direction of Congress & no way (when approved by that body) answerable to any individual for my conduct I shall not therefore notice his threats, but should he Attempt a Personal indignity, I shall endeavor to conduct myself in such a manner as to secure not only my own Approbation but that of my friends.
