I find by your Certificate of the 13 Instant, that Doctor Nathan Brownson is indebted to the United States, after deducting his pay in the year 1781, in the Sum of 938. ¾ dolars. you were Oblig'd me if you will inform me how this debt a rose which I may Judge of the propriety of its being placed against his pay and Commutation.

Mr. Hannon deputy Paymaster in Virginia, received from that State, in the year 1781 a large Sum in that State old Emissions, and paid into the hands of Lieut. Charles Stockley the Paymaster in the line, the Sum of One Million Six hundred Sixty Six thousand Six hundred & Sixty Six dollars & two thirds, which Sum Mr. Stockley informs me he advanced to the Officers and Soldiers on Account of that year. and Exhibited his Accot for these advances to the Auditors of the States soon after they had Commenced their Settlements with the Line who refused to receive it, tho' he says he believes that most of
