In the 9th Instant I pursued Cap John Phelen agreeable to your Instructions. Bliss who was perfectly acquainted with Phelen that he passed this Town on Sunday the 18 July which was the Morning he absconded — at Littleton a Town about 12 Miles from Concord he tarried the day and night, but discovered the greatest Anxiety to get forward pleading for an Excuse that he had a Brother Sick at Cadees which required his immediate presence. that inform when I had from one Hedden a Tavern Keeper, where he lodged & who appeared to me to be an intelligent man.
I received no information that I could depend on after this untill I arrived at Lake Champlain which was not untill the 20th my Journey being [undecipherable] to only imped by bad roads and the Circumstances I was Obliged to take to gain intelligence. after my being at Lake Champlain five days I was informed at Cl[undecipherable]
