Document 1786Letter to the Commissioner of Army Accounts concerning Captain Phelon; discusses his various travels in pursuing Phelon.
New York August 30 1786
On the 9h instant I pursued Captain John Phelon agreeably to your Instructions- I took the rout to Crown Point by the way of N4- at Concord in Massachusetts I was informed by a Captain Bliss, who was perfectly acquainted with Phelon that he passed thro’ Town on Sunday on the 16h of July which was the morning he absconded- at Littleton a town about twelve miles from Concord he tarryed the day + night, but discovered the greatest anxiety to get forward pleading for an excuse that he had a brother sick at Cohoss, which required his immediate presence- This information I had from one Kidder a Tavern Keeper where he lodged + who appeared to me to be an intelligent man- I received no information that I could depend on after this until I arrived at Lake Champlain which was not until the 2ot my journey being extreemly impeded by bad roads + the circuitous route I was obliged to take to gain intelligence. after my being at Lake Champlain five days I was informed at Colchester Point a man crossed over from there to Grand Isle (with a horse) fully answering the discription of Capt. Phelon. From these circumstances Sir I am fully of opinion that he has gone to Quebec or to some other place in Canada. I am Sir with the greatest respect + Esteem your most Hlee S. Jackson Pierce Esq ML
