Sir New York August 26 1786 Eliphalet Norris passed two forged Settlement Counterfeited Certificates for One thousand dollars Each made out in favor of Archibald Graham or Bearer, to Cap Thomas Barnes who also passed them to Simson, who also passed one of them to Deacon [undecipherable: Jan] Snider who passed it also to [undecipherable: Jon] Wheeler and his Brother of Grafton who finding it to be bad returned it to the Deacon afterwards Employed one Alijah Hammond to sell it without Effect. the other Certificate Turner Attempted to sell it in different ways. for that Purpose he put into the Hands of [undecipherable] Morton & Fisher in Boston & then left it with M^r Loville who was informed by me of its being bad & Turner heard it. thus every Stage of this Business [undecipherable] the first [undecipherable] Note came into Wheeler's hands & the then into M^r Lovely. Then Settled on [undecipherable] [undecipherable] presenting them an Earnest desire to bring them a way as tho they were all Convinced that they were Counterfeited, as this Conduct seems [undecipherable] reason you may remember that Turner was taken up for this reason when [undecipherable] in Boston. he was dismissed, but [undecipherable] improperly as the Simson was proved upon him by Winston's deposition, which is now Confirmed by Warren. in respect to Baines he says his own deposition that he received these Certificates as a deposit at Shelburn in Nova Scotia whereas Dunn & Brown Swear that he said bought them in North Carolina [undecipherable] who have also Sworn that Baines told them Absolutely to Turner, which is Contrary to Baines own Affadavit. and also that of Warren. Warners, Bradley & Winstons depositions prove pretty [undecipherable] Clearly that Baines Knew them to be Counterfeited. this Evidence Occasioned me to take up Baines who is bound over to your Court as will appear by the Bond Enclosed. in respect to Deacon Snider Knowledge of the one in his hands being Counterfeited. I am not so well informed but Warren says he Employed Hammond to sell it for him after it was [undecipherable] by Wheeler. I have such direct Evidence against [undecipherable] Norris that he probably must be Convicted. Norris who was one of his Agents, and is now in Goal in this City, has amply Confessed the whole transaction. he is not Acquainted with the other Agents but fully believes that Geo.
