[13] Philadelphia August 25. 1785. My dear General. The Gentleman who honors this letter with his care is M^r Tharp of Jamaica — he is on a visit to the Continent for the recovery of his health — and to promote that valuable object he purposes a tour through the eastern States with a view to render his residence in Boston as agreable as possible, and in order to produce the fairest report of our country, I beg leave to introduce him to the honor of your acquaintance and to request for him your best civilities while in Boston — he has been sometime a fellow-lodger with me — and I am authorised, as well from my own observation, as the report of his respectable friends, to assure you of meeting in M^r Tharp the polite Gentleman and agreable acquaintance. The packet with which M^r Tharp is so good as to charge himself is forwarded at the request of our State Society — and would have been sent sooner had any opportunity so good as the present conveyance offered.
