I have received your letter respecting your Claim for Commutation which shall be attended to. In Respect to your Claim for Subsistance money I believe it to be one of the engagements, which tho' not forgot by the Public cannot be paid for want of the means to do it; there is besides some difficulty in Obtaining the necessary documents to the Accounts of the Rations State due to the Army —

There being Considerable sums of Money Charged in the Books of my Office against Joseph Wood late Col. of the 8th Regiment Pennsylvania I have to request You in my Official Character not to grant him any monies untill he settles his Accounts with the United States —
Mr Howell Wishes your attention to the requests Contained in his Letter of the 8th Instant.
