[Letter from Colonel Butler the August. 1787 Relative to Lead to be replaced at Carlisle] Carlisle August 16^th 1786 In 1783 the Indians were very troublesome on the frontiers of this Country, which induced the march of the Troops then stationed at this post for their Protection, it so happened that instead [undecipherable] remained in the Magazine which caused us to apply to the Magistrates & others of this town for the loan of a small quantity to furnish the Troops, they had no other expedient but taking the window weights from the court house, to answer the purpose which had previously agreed to and about two hundred & fifty pounds was furnished therefrom made into ball & Cartridges — [undecipherable: that was not done by the?] [undecipherable] On the return of the Troops from the west, or put into Store the lead was only lent & has not been replaced and therefore request you will be pleased to order the quantity to be sent to the direction of [the] Agent [Squire?] who will have it appropriated to the [strikethrough: purpose] use of the court house — We are with great respect Sir Your most Ob^t Rich^d Butler M^rs Butler — then Comd^t Col^o Samuel Hodgdon Commissary of Military Stores
