The State of New York having honoured me with an Appointment, the duties of which are incompatible with the military Office which I held under the United States, it now becomes necessary, for me to resign my Commission in the Regulars of the United States
But before I take my leave of my military profession, I beg You Sir to accept my warmest acknowledgements for the patience and indulgence which I have experienced at your hands, and for the friendship which your conduct towards me has so uniformly manifested —
