This may certify that Joseph Savage was a mate in the 4^th Virginia Regiment in March 1780 & [undecipherable] he acted as Surgeon from that time till the end of the war. Robert My Surgeon to the Reg. Resigned and at that Time there was No Mate to the Reg. Doct. Joseph Savage was by Gen.^d Woodford, [undecipherable: appointed] to the Reg. but [whether] as Surgeon as Mate I am not Recollect [undecipherable] he did the Duty of both and was taken as Prisoner at the Fall of Charles Town [with] me and continued so untill My [undecipherable] [undecipherable].
