Dear Sir, I acknowledge the receipt of your Letter dated 8^th May last inclosing two Final Settlement Certificates, one in favor of myself, N^o 93,935 for One Hundred & Eighty two 64/90 Doll^s The other in favor of L^t. Percival Butler N^o 93,936 for Two hundred Dollars — I should have written you much sooner, only waiting for Mr. Benstead as a bearer, whose situation of affairs & were such as rendered it impossible for him to go sooner — I know you will do every thing in your power to oblige him. — Yours & [undecipherable signature] Jos^h. I have allowed him the sum of 180 dol^s Continental, which appears by M^r. Benstead's accounts to have been due him for one Years pay as a Supernumerary Officer, and which was drawn at different periods, and agreeably to the rules adopted, have reduced the said sum at Thirty for one — M^r. Sir, As a part of my accounts with the U.States remain unsettled, owing to a charge made against me by Colonel Francis Johnston (which I make no doubt you recollect) of 1200 dollars received from him, a part of which by his directions I paid to the Officers and Soldiers as pay from 15 March to 1 June 1779 and the ballance I returned to him — Therefore I thought that account totally settled, until informed by you to the contrary — On the settlement of my account as Regimental Pay Mas.
