Response to Nicholson's Inquiries
Document 1786In response to the recipient's inquiries, the author notes the service of John Hughes and includes a copy of the muster roll. The author requests a copy of Capt. James Smith's depreciation so he can close his account. He says that all the Officers of Colonel Waylon's regiment have received State depreciations from Virginia so the Certificates held for these men should be held. The certificate of John Gray should be charged to New York instead of Pennsylvania and the cases of William Jackson, James Crosby, and Captain Charles McHenry are pending.

Dr. Sir,
Your several favors of the 13th. & 14th. inst. with their enclosures were duly received agreeably to your request I have examined the rolls of the late 8th. Reg. Penna. and find that John Hughes, first Lieut. is mentioned in Cap. Stokely’s Compy. for the months of October, Novemr. & Decemr. 1778 & Januy. 1779 resignd 23d. Novemr. 1778, and for your better information a copy of the Muster roll is enclosed & certified
I wish you to send me as soon as convenient a copy of Cap. Lt James Smith’s acct. (of artily.) of depreciation, to enable me to close his accounts with the States On enquiry I am led to believe that all the Officers of the quota of Virginia included in the accounts of Colonel Moylan’s reg. have recd. of the State depreciation of their subsistence from the 1t. June 1778. I have therefore to request you to detain in your hands all the Certificates that may be unissued belonging to these Officers and an application of any of the parties to refer them to this office for settlement The certificate of John Gray was issued in Philadelphia, but he appears to have been a Soldier in the 1st. New York Reg. and is returned as of the quota of that State
As soon as time will permit I will forward the necessary information relative to Wm. Jackson, James Crosby, & Cap. Charles McHenry
Yours &c Jos. Howell Jur.
John Nicholson Esqr.
