Dr Sir
I received your favor with Mr Robt Patton's certificates final settlements — You mention two John Smiths, the one a Corporal — the John Smith is the Private and was a prisoner of War — In your letter of November 30th 1785 you say there is a John Smith returned on the rolls of the 9th Regt a prisoner during the time you mention; but as James Smith — calling him James was a mistake of mine — he only wants his pay during his captivity, which is mentioned in a letter I wrote to you — I have no copy therefore don't know how long he was a prisoner — he was taken at Paromus when Major Biles was killed and remained till about Christmas 1786 — he lives with Colonel Colbertson near the Ships & when ever I go that way he is at me for the settlement; therefore if all things are right you will please to send it me the first opportunity
