New York May 18^th 1786 Dear Sir I intinded to have seen you at New Haven this month on a visit to my Friends in Connecticut, but my business prevents. There is now a large representation in Congress, and your claim may perhaps be as properly determined now as at another time, and as I am responsible for the Sum in your hands I am uneasy that it should lay much longer in this situation — I therefore think it best to obtain a Credit for the balance in your hands, or a decided act of Congress allowing or disallowing your pretensions — the former I think the best, because the public may then lay out of the money, untill they think proper to come to a decision: for which reason I have inclosed your Accounts current formerly transmitted you, and the continuance of them since you left the Army. the final balance agrees with your stating unto a few Dollars, which difference arises principally from deductions made in the Comptrollers Office on the settlements of your Accounts and which must be lost. Your balance as stated by you was Three thousand two hundred & ninety nine Dollars 5⁶/90. my balance before the errors were added was Three thousand three hundred & thirty eight Dollars 3⁸/90. the errors amount to Thirty seven Dollars 4⁵/90. which makes the balance to be Three thousand Three hundred and twenty five Dollars 6³/90. I cannot determine how this difference arises. I have checked my account with the vouchers and can find no error. I attempted also to find by several Days proofe in what entries the difference consisted, but the difficulty was too great and I desisted. If you do not agree to the balance as now stated I wish you to come here, for by labor & care you may undoubtedly at last find the propriety of my balance — but if you think proper to acquiesce in it I wish for your receipt for so much money on account of your pay in the service of the United States, which I propose to make a charge of in my accounts and so get finally clear of it — I have also inclosed you a copy of the act of Congress allowing you the money lost in your payments and wish to have your disposition on it forwarded to me Thez^a Wetmore Esquire
