[kin] The pay of a Judge Advocate for the Army in the Massachu- setts Bay was fixed by Congress, Sept 21 1775 at 50 Dols [per month] [illegible] [undecipherable] twice determined to be [its?] [undecipherable] On the 6 of June 1775 it was ordained that the Judge Advocate of the [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] at [undecipherable] have the same pay & rations of a Captain. and March 27 1778 the Judge Advo- cate General was allowed 75 dols monthly & to the former rations. It was resolved that on Decem 21 1779 the ratio of a Judge Advocate be that of a Col & the deputy be that of a Lieut Colo. [strikethrough: on the 10 of Jan 1780] on [the] Nov 10 1780, Judge Advocates Salary [strikethrough: settled] was stated at 60 Dols [per month] from [thence] [his appointment] to March 27 1778, at 75 to [Aug?] [undecipherable] [strikethrough: his depreciation to be settled] and after Aug 1780 his pay be 1140 dols monthly & 2 rations @ day. his deputy to have 15 dols & [per month] in addition to his pay per the line. Sept 27 1781, a recommendation to the States to settle their depreciation of the departments July 11 1782 Judge Advo, at 75 dols pay 2 rations daily. [was told?] 12⅔ dols & [per month] the deputy for the S[outhern?] Army to be taken from the line to have [undecipherable] dols, & no in[crease?] his pay in the line, two ration @ day & 12⅔ dols & [per month] [undecipherable] An Officer bearing another Commission, who exercised, by the approbation of Congress two Offices had in general an additional pay annexed to his first appointment — in the same manner as the Resolves of Nov 10. 1780 gives 15 dols additional pay to the deputy. It was customary to taken Officers out of the Line to fill some of the Staff Departments, but they never received the pay and emoluments of both Offices, and only an additional allowance, the [illegible] tions appear to forbid [any?] [such?] allowances [undecipherable] [undecipherable].
