[p. 2]
Agreeable to a contract made with Mr James Marrow, I certify that the sd James Marrow has cleaned Five Hundred and [undecipherable] Acres for the United States at eighteen [undecipherable] of a dollar [strikethrough: in] each, and is intitled to receive thirty seven pounds Ten Shillings for the same, at the War Office, New York. Ten days after this certificate is produced, which makes up the number Two thousand Five Hundred which he has cleared —
The Honble Mr Thes Pickney
Secretary at War
I am Sir —
West Point 12 May 1784 —
I believe you misunderstood me in my Letter of 6th Instant — Respecting the Ammunition as I did not mean to have a Contract but that the Am— should be had during their good pleasure and then see what for them to do —
I believe there is about Two Thousand French Hpond. Poplect seems that is reprovable [undecipherable] than [undecipherable] and the old Stocks will be wanting to up for patronage. Some of the others I am sure that good will do for soldiers. a Considerable number of the them will make you some get for [undecipherable] perhaps, and the Rest [undecipherable] is worth but little else than to fire, than being some that will do to help mount the Best Guns —
Mr Marrow is of the Opinion that it will take almost Thirty months expense and stock what is worth doing in the Sum of Eighteen Months as you propose — he is also of the Opinion that the Three mentioned above may be repaired and Stoke including one with the other at Three Dollars each, and offered to do them and [undecipherable] you then that work it —
I expect in the Course of a few Weeks to be able to determine accurately what is and what is not worth doing, and we form or draw that List we hope in forwarding it to you —
