New York 21 March 1786. Dear Sir, Inclosed is a return of the Officers of the 8^th Reg. p[undecipherable] who were arranged in June 1779 – I have searched e[undecipherable] muster in this Office as also the returns of that reg[undecipherable] filed in the War Office, and cannot find any one record of the supernumerary Officers — Cap. Jack ha[undecipherable] better make application to Colonel Brodhead, [undecipherable] I have not the least doubt, has a return of them — On a further examination of the rolls of the late 10^th Regiment I find that Cap. W^m Cox, Lieu^t Rob[undecipherable] Hooper, Adam Keller and James Tolbert were dur[undecipherable] on the 1^st July 1778 — M^r Hooper is charged with the sum of 206 Dollars received for the recruiting service in June 1777 from Cap. Shade, which you will p[undecipherable] to notice at the rate of exchange on settlement — the other Officers are not charged with any monies — The supernumerary pay has been drawn for those Officers as appears by the several Abstracts —— W^m McGraw of the 2^d Reg. was inlisted agreeable to Musters the 1^st July 1778 — Cap John Stricker will apply for the settlement . —— John Rea, 2 M^r to the late 6^th R[undecipherable] was exchanged the 25 October 1780 — this Officer is [undecipherable] Officer is supposed to have been taken with Major M[undecipherable] at New Town (Bucks County) I find him mustered December 1777, the rolls for January 1778 I cann[undecipherable] find, and those for February take no notice of him On settlement of M^r Rea's accounts, the U States will not consider him an Officer longer than the 27 Aug 1778 at which time it appears he broke his parole, and by a letter from M^r John Hoops, Administrator to the Estate it appears he soon after entered on board the Holker priva-ter, from which I should suppose M^r Rea did not consider himself amenable to martial Law — I have wrote fully to M^r Hoops on the subject and refer you to the letter — I find John Griffith of the late 3 Reg. has been settled with to the 1^st January 1784 — You will please to enquire what regiment Cap. Charles McHenry belonged to — I do not remember the name or the person — As soon as the Business of the Office will permit I will take up the accounts you have requested — I am &^c J. Howell j^r.
