Settlement of Officers' Accounts
Document 1786The author is updating the recipient regarding the pay status of several individuals, including himself. Capt. Patten-Smith was legitimately on the rolls of the 10th Regiment and should be apprised the amount owed him; Edw. Evans, who many think is dead, may in fact be alive; and Mr. Dean claims that he was not paid and the author does not have the receipts to prove otherwise. The author himself is owed eleven days pay.
Philada. 25: January, 1786.
Dr. Sir,
Your favor of the 30 Novr. has greatly obliged me - inclosed is an order from Cap. Patten Smith’s memorandum sent to me, therefore it must have been a mistake of mine in calling him James I imagine he was of Sample’s Co. tho’ he says Hammond’s I had a Lieut Hammond which may possibly be that he takes to be his Captain, however you may be assured he is the Smith mentioned in the rolls of the 10th. Likewise the Secretary at War’s order for pay being in service to the 15 November as my final settlements are only for the 3d. I have Eleven days pay due, for which you will be so obliging as to give me a Certificate, for ’tho it’s but a small sum yet what is my due as well with me as the U. States If it is necessary for me to give any receipts let me know and I will send them Should be glad to know the ansr. of Smith’s pay that I may acquaint him with it
Edwd. Evan’s friends will have him dead, tho’ I think there is a great chance of left that he is living Mr. Dean insists that I never paid him I have lost or mislaid the receipts of the Officers, therefore in case I am obliged to pay him it may so happen that more of these Officers may call on me Yours &c Richd. Humpton
J. Howell Esqr.
