Philadelphia Dec. 10. 1785. Dear Sir, I take this opportunity, by Cap. Bird to write you a few lines to beg you the favor of you to take the trouble to settle that note, that I sent the General by Captain Wade, which I got of W. Dunscomb for three Months pay, which I allowed him in my accounts for the same, and as the other Officers rec^d it, he said, to do me justice, he would give me an order for the same, and desire the General to pay it, and gave him an Acct. of so doing I shall take it kind, if you will please to see me righted in the affair, and send me the money, or a few lines, to let me know the obstacle. Inst. reached me on thursday last, and would have been answered by the post of Yesterday, if I could have compleated the enquiries necessary, to grant a Certificate for David Murray, which is now done and subjoined — there is a David Murray of Grubb Co. inlisted the 24 April 1777, but I suppose deserted in August following as he is not on the Rolls of that & several succeeding Months. M^r. Pierce arrived on the 4^th. Inst. and has been very busy in Col. Nicola's affair — he expects to compleat the business today, so that I expect you will receive a packet from him, by the same post that conveys this — as soon as leisure will permit, I will take up the Acct. of Cap. Thompson Cap. M. McConnell This may certify that David Murray of the 5. Penn. Reg. [undecipherable] on the Muster Rolls of the [undecipherable] Regiment the 1. Oct. 1778, was furloughed in [undecipherable] 1780 for — days and is mustered as deserted the 7^th. July 1780 — but it further appears by the Act of omissions [undecipherable] of the Penn. Line settled by me, that the said Murray, was legally discharged from the 11^th Reg. the 28 of January 1781. John Nicholson Esq. Joseph Howell Jun. Ass^t Com. Army Accts. Sir New York January 17. 1786 Captain Thomas Campbell Executor to the estate of [undecipherable] Campbell, late a Lieut. in the 6^th. Regiment deceas'd, has presented an account of the S^d Archibald for recruiting sundry men in the year 1777, but for want of sufficient vouchers I am not able to close it — Cap. Campbell informs me, that you cannot grant the depreciation and supernumerary pay of the S^d Lieut. Campbell until his account is settled with the United States — on conversing with Col. Becker, who then commanded the Regiment, I find that Lieut. Campbell did not receive any money from him, but it appears that some was received of Jeremiah Laughry — the Captain of the Company to whom Col. Becker paid the money for recruiting, and as Lieut. Campbell's account of bounty paid amounts to as much as was paid to Cap. Laughry by Col. Becker — I have with the approbation of M^r.
