[New York January 9. 1786 / To Col Talmadge] [Copied] New York January 9. 1786. Sir In consequence of your request I have examined into the State of the Account of the Cincinnati Society with the regiment of Dragoons lately commanded by Col. E. Sheldon, and find that I have paid the three months pay belonging to the lots to the Treasurer of the Society, and that [for] the remaining Officers of the regiment I made [strikethrough: good settlements] —— of out of certificates for the months pay for each, and delivered the same with their whole arrears into the hands of Elijah James the agent of the regiment; and who alone is accountable to the Treasurer for the same, and [undecipherable] he may have delivered over this pay to the Officers. His orders on me not being presented authenticated settlements and the persons who had signed to the society [at the time of the settlement] also unknown, occasioned me to deliver the whole arrears into the hands of Mr James. I have stoped from the [undecipherable] Mr [undecipherable] twenty five Dols for the society, which I do not find has been delivered into the hands of the Trea[surer] My own months pay I have paid, but do not find that I have an acknowledgement of it; will you be so kind as to procure me one?
