New York Dec. 29. 1785 Sir, Your favor of the 7^th Inst. did not reach me until the 25. agreeably to your desire I waited on M^r Denning, the Commissioner appointed to settle, the Quarter Master Generals Department who informs me, that it is necessary you should produce your appointment, and if in your power, a certificate from the principal in Office, what sums of Money has been paid you for pay, or any other purposes those being produced, he apprehends your account may be closed — M^r Denning further observes that a Certificate may be necessary, specifying the time of your continuance in service. Respecting the pay that may be due, which in Captain Porters Company I am at a loss to ascertain, as it was usual at that time, for the Captains to receive the money, and pay their own Men; this [undecipherable] Capt. Porter has done, as his Company was not attach'd to any Regim^t during the time you charge — if on the contrary your pay has not been drawn, it will be absolutely necessary, that a certificate be given by your late Capt. now Colonel Porter, that this pay is yet due, and the reason why it was not drawn — all those certificates being obtained I have reason to believe justice will be done you — your presence will be necessary to accomplish the business Jos.
