New York Dec. 19, 1785 —
Dear Sir,
Your favor of the 2d Instant, with the register, were duly received — the accompanying it the payments made by Henry Caldwell, & Lieut Col. Richardson, were December 2, 1776, paid pay for the Supernumeraries of the regiment to the last day of November 1776, which have reason to suppose the regiment was discharged at the last day of June & 1776, limits the power of his Superiors, in the last day that says — This brought me out of Capt Johnson, have another claim — it further appears that Cap. Jenkins received on the 2d December following yours, from Gentleman the sum of £174 pistoles, & bought of his Company — Major Lloyd not yet settled his accounts, some time since I have enquired in this particular relating to John Hoops, amounting to £4 776 8 left, to be forwarded to Mr. Richmond in consequence of some charges which the State had a general lien, a settlement not covered to his debt on settlement of the regimental accounts — you mention a Cap. James Hughes, this was more of that name in the regiment who had a commission — you will please to inform yourself of that fact, and the person meant, if so, invite and you the Certificate.
As the frontier goes very fast with the registers, I must beg you to forward by every post, at least three times the Number you send last, as any delay on the part of the Office would be very agreable to the Public, who I have reason to believe is sick of the contract — I am informed he has already entered a complaint to the Board of Treasury of the inattention paid to the papers brought to the Office — this complaint however is not yet announced officially.
As Mr. Pierce is absent on a visit to his friends, and not expected for some time, it would make me much happy were any thing to arise to his Prejudice or my dishonor
