New York November 30^th 1785. D^r Sir, Agreeably to your request of the 15^th Ins.^t I have examined the Books of the Pay Office & do not find any charge against Cap. Robert Patton it appears by the Books of the late Auditors of the Army that he settled his accounts for reckoning with them on the 8^th March 1779 — am therefore ready to deliver a certificate for the amount retained from him, on his proper order — Edward Evans, late of the 6^th Regiment is returned in the rolls as Deserted the 9^th July 1781. — There is a John Smith returned on the rolls of the 10^th Regiment, a prisoner during the time you mention, but no James [undecipherable] I must request you would be particular in the names of the Soldiers, to avoid impositions, for you well know there are many of them would swear to any name for a trifle Inclosed is a return of the Supernumerary Officers of the 11^th Regiment with the periods when the money was drawn by you, which I flatter myself will be of some service to you — I am, with much esteem Yours sincerely Jos Howell Jr. Gen^l.
