Dear Sir, I have examined the Musters of the second Regiment and find Samuel Woods to be mustered furloughed in January and February 1780. and a Returned deserted the 1^st of March following — the time of his enlistment I cannot ascertain, as the rolls are with you — it appears that he Joined the line afterwards; but at what time the musters do not inform me — on the 1^st of January 1782. he is on the Roll of the second Regiment — and how he came to be omitted for that years pay I cannot at present determine — I think there was one of that name inserted in the list of errors — you will oblige me in Searching your Registers one more — and if not with you — will thank you for a certificate, as the pay for 1782 Appears due him. — I am Sir yours, with respect J Howell John Nicholson Esq^r. — Pay Office New York November 14^th. 1785. — Sir, In answer to yours of the 4^th Instant, I have to inform you on behalf of the Paymaster General that I have examined the accounts of the late Invalid Regiment. and find that you Received on the 17.^th May 1784. of your own Receipt of Colonel Nicola two. certificates, one for pay of 1782 and one for balance of clothing due — it further appears by the Returns that you joined the Regiment the 10^th of may 1782. and was discharged the 14^th of December following how you are deficient for three years pay I cannot ascertain — you also mention of belonging to the 12 Regiment of Pennsylvania at the time you were transferred, if the Transfer was on the day above mentioned you certainly could have belonged to the 12^th. Regiment, as that Regt did not exist at the time, neither has it since the 1^st Jan 1778. — from these circumstances it will be necessary that some Substantial proof be produced of your being in actual Service for the time mentioned, before any thing more can be obtained. —— I am Sir yours J Howell M^r Robert Anderson New York November 11^th 1785. + Dear Sir — I have not had Leisure to answer your favor of the 4^th Instant sooner, Inclosed is the certificate for 267⁸⁵/90 dollars. with a certificate from the Register and One from me, which I flatter myself will answer every purpose — but if you still wish to have it made in the Name of the Commonwealth — you will please to get M^r Nicholson to corroborate what I have expressed and it then can be done but not without it — As this is the usual mode of transacting business at the Treasury, I will retain the power till I hear from you — M^r. Pierce informs me that he has not heard any further of your business — Present my comp^lt to Cap. McConnell and inform him that Cap.
