[Public Service] Lieutenant Colonel [undecipherable] at [West Point] [War Office] [endorsement, bottom right corner, rotated:] [undecipherable] War Office October 12^th 1785 Sir By the Treasury hereof, you will receive 1014 Dollars on account of the pay and subsistence to Captain Shaumburk's and their Companies, which you will appropriate agreeably to the abstract furnished you at War. War Office pursuant to your Chamber Attorney. You will also receive by the same person 530 Dollars which I have obtained from the Treasury for the purpose of subsisting and transporting the Corps under Captain Shaumburk from West Point to Fort Pitt. This last sum you will place in the hands of Captain Shaumburk or one of his Subalterns, who must undertake the duty of Issuing Monies and supply the Company Provisions and Waggons on the March. The Officer [going] there [?] to the Payoff, must keep fair and regular Accounts of his disbursements to be accompanied with good and [undecipherable] vouchers, for which return he is to allow a satisfactory compensation. As soon as Capt. Shaumburk shall arrive at Fort Pitt, he will apply to Mr. O'Hara or his [undecipherable] at West Point, to supply Provisions and Stores as far as Fort McIntosh. You will be pleased to inform the Officer entrusted with the Money that it is expedient he should render his Accounts for settlement at the Treasury, as early as may be, after his Arrival at Fort McIntosh. I have endeavoured as much as possible, to avoid the necessity of imposing this duty on the Officers of the Corps, but as Mr. O'Hara and myself have both failed in procuring a suitable person to do the [Service]; I am the more persuaded it will be cheerfully undertaken. General Knox informs me from Philadelphia that he authorized Mr. [Hogsdon?] to hire round to this City, about three hundred thin Hogsheads of [undecipherable] with that left Shaumburk's Men could be supplied out of that stock, in lieu of those of inferior quality which they have drawn at West Point.
