Fort M^cIntosh, July 16 1785. Sir, on the 11^th instant, I am informed that three chiefs, (and some from Indians) of the Six Nations had arrived at Fort Pitt, and wished very much to speak to the Commanding Officer. Agreeably to this desire, I rode up to Pittsburg and met them in Council, when to my surprise the Complaynte, the principal chief, had the original articles of the treaty which was signed last October at Fort Stanwix, along with him, and towards the close of the speech, said they were burthesome, and wished to deliver them up. I have been pleased to inclose to you their speech, and my answer to it. It is reported that a Mr Brant has Lately raised from London who (will the commanding officer of the British in that quarter.) has informed the Six Nations that their Country has been ceded to the Congress by the King of Great Brittain. In consequence of which they charge Congress of base, dishonest by this act of treating, and say they are in danger of their own people. We have left Fort Pitt fully satisfied by to appearances with the temper of their chiefs; but the Complaints in their possession of the British, it is very evident that all treaties held by us with the Indians, will have but little weight with them.
