Sir,
I arrived here on Sunday last with the Office which is now fixed in this City I received your favor of the 11th Inst on Monday — annexed you will receive a Certificate from me of the actual amount that the Certificates mentioned in your letter signed for it appears that No 2022 has not only been altered in the sum but in the name — I wish it were possible to get at the root of this great evil, but much fear it cannot be accomplished. I however beg you to continue your laudable enquiry, and rest assured that every attention on my part shall be paid to them — You will please to direct your letters to John Pierce Esquire, 4th Memt as all letters for him on public service are free. Those that I have received from you have been paid by me & refunded by the United States —
