Philadelphia June 7. 85 Dear Sir Agreeably to your request of the 5 Instant I sent you inclosed twenty five Certificates from Number 24, 276 to 89, 336 inclusive, dated State of Penn.^a the 5^th Jan^y last, also not wish to trust one more for fear of Accidents, and as I expect M^r Pierce will arrive before next Post, a larger supply may be sent you — I should suppose it would be best to erase the word Pennsylvania out and insert that of Maryland — Pray let me hear from you immediately on the receipt of this, and direct your next Ticket to M^r Pierce on public service — this will save Postage — M^r Wells has not yet gone for Maryland — in place of which he is very unwell — The Lottery Ticket came safe, but I believe it is N^o 2375 in place of N^o 375 how to one it is — Wishing you better, I am, as ever Yours J Howell [?] John Pierce Esquire. Philadelphia June 10^th 1785 Dear Sir, Yours of the 27 Ult^o with the enclosures was duly received, tho too late to be answered by last post — I could have wished you had sent a copy of the register for the Jersey Line, as I much fear the other will not be accepted by the Treasurer of New Jersey, as the Law requires a certified copy from the Miffed Books, specifying the Number, Letter &c and particularly the Commutations, the Interest not being paid on the Certificates granted for it — I have however forwarded a Copy and specified the Certificates granted for pay — In the returns sent me for depreciation given by your State, there is one that is noted settled from and to but does not mention the Regiment or Corps. I wish you to inform me that I may compare it as I have done those of Hazens, Armands and the Invalids — none of the former have had any settlements with M^r Pierce prior to 1782, those of the second (except Frances Henry) I have been settled with me for pay from the 1^st Jan^y 1782, and I have great reason to believe that numbers have been settled for at the Treasury previous to that period — this I must examine into on my arrival at New York, this Letter you will find by my return, inclosed in what manner they have been settled with the figures I believe to be just and proper — I find in the list of Armands Corps that number enlisted in 1782 — pray inform me if any of them have had other settlements than for depreciation — Inclosed you will receive an amount of pay due M^r Gordon — he is not entitled to Commutation — I have also inclosed you a number of Certificates from Colonel [?], among which is one in favor of Cap. [?] — As I expect M^r Pierce very hour, you will please direct your next packet to him, either at this place or New York, the latter place I expect to move to in the course of next week — M^r Andrews is out of Town will call again and will endeavour to procure your [?]
