[M^r. Pierce / J. C. Jackson / 6 June '85] N York June 6^th 1785 Dear Jackson After a short and pleasant passage from Charleston I arrived here this evening in good spirits. I thank you for the friendly hints you gave me, which I received but the day before I left Charleston, the letter having come to me by the way of Philadelphia — you may assure yourself that it is altogether groundless, and that I can perfectly satisfy the gentlemen concerned. The Board of Treasury with whom I conversed to day on the subject of this species yet clear to the Southern lines, are of opinion, that it will be utterly impossible for them to advance it to the New Composed Officers and Privates, but will endeavour to place all the Officers on the same footing with those to the Northward — it will therefore be necessary that you return to the former certificates for the whole sum due to them and to the latter the balance after deducting this species to be received — but in case the Officers should be dissatisfied with their deduction having they should never obtain any thing you may give them their choice to take it in certificates or not — I hope you, having by this time completed the business you have not, this letter may be of some assistance to you — I am D Sir sincerely your friend Jn^o Pierce [It is uncertain whether Col^o M'Pherson can be found at Newbern, or Halifax or [undecipherable] either.
