Annapolis June 3. 1785 Just received your last letter — In answer can only observe 37½ comes on now and that the papers & money of Hamiltons is all right charge the same to me — I am sick with an Intermittant and incapable of doing business — am quite low — but my Clerk is very indus=trious and the army business does not suffer — Jack is Young — and Crop work it is — Beg every (and Early) exertions towards furnishing me with Certificate paper — If M^r Pierce does not arrive pray send on the one Livre P^r next post. Dear Sir Inclosed you will receive a return of the Monies Retained by me on settlement of the accounts of the late Line of Penn.^a amounting to 57,652⁹⁰ dollars which sum is carried to the Credit of the state in the books of the P.M.Gen.^l You will observe I have not Credited the monies advanced to Cap.^t Wiley & Jordan, this arose from their neglect in not inserting those advances in their Accounts & my supposing they would receive Commutation from which I generally deducted them. I shall however call on them and endeavor to have this mistake rectified — Col. Tilghman also omitted Crediting the state for monies paid him, but am informed by his Attorney that was done at the Treasury. Doc.^rs Bond & Johnston have not Settled their accounts, I therefore could not with propriety Certify the advances made them were passed to the Credit of the state. Joseph Howell J^r.
