Philadelphia 10th May 1785 Sir The Brigantine Irish Commanded by Capt Dougherty that leaves this for your place on Wednesday the 11th instant, has on Board a hogshead to your address containing the following articles - Viz - 20 Coats for Infantry - 20 Ditto for Artillery - 40 White Cloth Vests 40 Pair Breeches 20 Artillery hats and 25 Linen Shirts - only from twenty to thirty suits were ordered, but as those forwarded were all on hand suitable for Artillery and they also were recruiting, I thought best to send them on. The return inclosed to the War Office shews the exact state of the remainder of the Clothing on hand - and I think it probable General Knox will direct me to purchase hats suitable for the whole of the Infantry, and the remainder for the Artillery, and I shall accordingly wait wait to hear from him on the subject, the freight is paid, you have only to receive the hogshead and forward one a receipt therefor. Let me know if the Clothing is in every respect such as you would wish. For while so small a quantity is providing appearances may be attended to.
With Sentiments of esteem I am Sir, Your Most Obedient Servant Saml Hodgdon Commissary Stores Major Fish
