Dear Sir
Your Letters dated March 28 & April 8 came to hand yesterday, before this day I presume Mr Audevert has received my orders for the amount of the last quarters salary — I shall attempt to retain in my hands sufficient to discharge the next quarter altho I have not enough at present — It was my wish to meet the Office at New York, that I might pursue the business immediately on my arrival, which must necessarily be retarded by the confusion of a remove — It is my opinion that it is expected the Office would remove with the others, that it cannot properly be conducted except where the Treasury Board sits — and that it will be necessary the whole Office leave Philadelphia, it being equally reasonable that the remaining claimants of Pennsylvania should come to New York as those of N. York & N. England have been obliged to come to Philada — I therefore expect you have orders before this time, but if not as I shall so soon be with you, it is not now necessary that you remove previous to my arrival but only be in preparation to do it — I intend to sail in the first vessel that goes for Charleston, please to call at the Post Office and take up for me all my letters for fear they'll be forwarded this way, and please also to present my compliments to the Gentlemen of the Office.
P.S. If the State should not be in my name — I trust you to keep this letter in your hands — Yours &c Pierre [Joseph Howell?] Junr
