Dear Sir, Philadelphia May 3. 1785.
Knowing your disposition for agriculture I have taken the Liberty to propose you for a member of the Society lately established here for the promoting that art. [undecipherable] you with a certificate of your election, and a pamphlet containing an address of the Society, and a summary of its laws, and premiums offerd.
I wish this institution may give rise to a similar one in each of the States, by which one great object of this Society will be accomplished.
Mr Bowdoin & Mr Samuel Phillips Junr were elected honorary members at the same time. My brother, Dr John Warren, Dr Waterhouse & Dr Dexter were nominated at our meeting last evening. When you have opportunity to meet any of these gentlemen I persuade myself you will consult on the forming of such an institution in Massachusetts.
Mr Samuel Powell president of the Society
Tench Francis treasurer
George Clymer
Tim Pickering secretary, are a committee of correspondence, and the Society's correspondents are requested to address their communications to the secretary.
I am dear Sir
with sincere esteem
your most obedient Servant
Tim Pickering
P.S. I add half a dozen copies of the address for you distribute among the ingenious lovers of Agriculture.
[Benja Lincoln Esqr]
