Elizabeth Town Ap.l 30.85
Sir
Upon making application to the treasury for the Payment of the interest upon my notes I found that two of mine altho’ issued for monthly pay, were not included in the list or return given to the treasurer The numbers of the note alluded to were 62.887 & 62.888 given the one for Four hundred fifty two Doll.s & 21/90 the other for six hundred & four Dollars _ the first bearing interest from Jany.1.1782 the ^other from Jan.1.1783.
Should Mr Pierce be in Philadelphia, he will recollect (but as he may not be there, I think it proper to acquaint you) that these notes were given to me by M.r Pierce in this town on his way in June last from New York to Philadelphia and they were given as the ballance due me upon the settle- -ment of my Paymaster’s acct. which he but just compleated & for which purpose he had brought blank certificates with him. As the treasurer cannot pay Interest upon these notes without be- -ing absured that the person in whose favor they were drawn belonged to the Jersey line & that they were not for commutation, I have to request that you will be so good as to write to & give him satisfaction
