[Major Pierce Savannah] [Oct. 5. 1785 from Mr Clay] Dear Sir I have sent you my Accounts to the 31 December 1778. the Vouchers are all with them, & I believe in Order, as Entered in the Acc^t. they are all Ballanced at the Periods the Originals transmitted to the Pay Office were. I have not so fully explained all the Charges as in the Original Acc^t, not deeming it necessary, as the Vouchers accompany these, and at the same time desirous of most Dispatching the business as quick as possible out of my own hands. [strikethrough: there] I paid James Rae by D^pt Com Tea^r of Purchases in June & July 1778 in two Warrants together £7000— £250 more than the Amount, Say £7250. I paid him a much larger sum short on another War^t of the 7: Inst^t— though I have Receipts for no more than I paid & have charged to the U. Stat^s— I did not discover the Error until a considerable time after, and from being pushed about so frequently, had no convenient Opportunity to have it Remedied. I made him sensible of the mistake, & the sum is charged in my Account against the United States in Sep^t 1780 as you will observe when they come under your Examination. I am Employing every leisure hour to make out my [strikethrough: the balance of my] Accounts, & will if agreeable to you furnish you with them & the Vouchers as I get through— if the form is not right, or any other mode will be more convenient, I will be obliged to you for your direction.
